Getting Back in the Urban Groove

Of all the photos I took while I was in Maine last week, this is one of my faves. The colors, the urban setting, and all this fresh produce available at Christmastime--note the Christmas lights framing the window--all of it appeals to me.

Among all my shots of seashore, boats, mountaintops, sunrises, sunsets, and Atlantic, I love this piece of urban life--the traditional storefront with its plate windows and the warm light that beckons to the cold night "Come in! Come into the Land of Plenty."

I also like the corner-of-the-eye phantom on the right: the teenager who had just sneaked around the corner to call a friend while her mom with two younger teen brothers in tow braved the winter wind and headed for their place on the street in Camden, Maine to watch the Christmas parade (yes, a Christmas parade at night!) I saw Mom striding down the street, and I know she thought her daughter was also in tow.

This photo represents so much that's good about America: abundance, community, teenagers, urban grocers, small town trust (that a teen is safe after dark), and, for me, hope--exemplified by a small urban grocer's enticing window display of the best he or she has to offer. Putting it all right up front for everyone to see.
